    The word hěn is actually a bit strange and doesn't always mean "very". In simple statements like "I am tall" use of hěn is almost compulsory. Simply saying "wǒ gāo" sounds far too blunt.

    In negative sentences you don't need to use hěn. You can say "wǒ bù gāo" to mean "I am not tall" without sounding overly blunt.
